Troubleshooting the AN/VIC-1 System
Background: the
VIC-1 has its origins in the early 1960’s.
The system was built for
use with the AN/VRC-12 series radios.
While some items of the
system are still being manufactured today, most of the equipment is older, in
some cases over 55 years old.
Age is hard on
connectors, cable insulation and switches.
If you have problems
with your system here are some things to try:
The system does not turn
on:
The system gets 24 volt DC power from wither J501 or J503 connectors.
J501 will be connected to an MT-1029 radio mount, and the mount will be connected to a vehicle battery system. On the AM-1780 the "MAIN POWER" switch needs to be at "NORM" and the "INSTALLATION SWITCH" will be set to "OTHER".
If J503 is connected to a vehicle battery, then "MAIN POWER" will be set to "INT ONLY" and the "INSTALLATION SWITCH" will be set to "INT ONLY"
In either case, make sure the "POWER CKT BKR" is in the on position.
One control C-2298 or
C-10456 is not working:
Connect a different known good headset. If still not working-
Move the CX-4723 cable from one connector to the other. If still not working-
Connect the CX-4723 to a known working control box.
These actions should have eliminated the headset and cable as part of the problem.
If the problem is not in the cable or headset, open the back of the control box, 4 screws and it may take a little force to get the panel off the back. Inside is a replaceable module, A80. There are two screws holding the module in, pull the module out and reseat it, then check if the control is working. If not, this module can be swapped from a known good control box. A80 modules are available from the store.
One headset is not working correctly:
Check that the Y-cord is plugged in with the long leg of the Y on the left hand connector of the C-2298 marked “INT J803” and which maybe marked with a yellow stripe, and the short leg is plugged into the right hand connector marked “RAD J802”.
